چکیده
Abstract Plants have long served as a first line of defence against viral-borne diseases. Their chemical constituents also afforded sound basis for antiviral drug discovery. The plant family Amaryllidaceae is distinguished its isoquinoline alkaloids, some which proved to be interesting leads. Its lectin (or agglutinin) principles likewise attracted considerable attention potential drugs. This review focuses on the activities that been described lectins Amaryllidaceae. Of thirty known in family, fourteen screened nearly seventy pathogens belonging thirteen viral families. Whilst good were reported most cases, from Galanthus nivalis , Narcissus pseudonarcissus and Hippeastrum hybrid identified with best overall activities. They displayed potent inhibitory effects human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1(III B ) proliferation CEM lymphoblastic cells (EC 50 s 0.005, 0.009 0.004 μM, respectively). Although significant effort was dedicated Retroviridae, noteworthy observed members other families (such hepatitis C Flaviviridae). Furthermore, shown highly selective agents, devoid toxicities towards forty employed hosts. Almost all details their modes operation emerged studies carried out HIV. inhibit attachment, fusion adsorption variety host cells. Modulation entry occur via interference envelope glycoprotein. These observations fit into key biological characteristic lectins, sugar-binding proteins. Graphical

Alkaloid Constituents of the Amaryllidaceae Plant Amaryllis belladonna L.
The plant family Amaryllidaceae is well-known for its unique alkaloid constituents, which exhibit a wide range of biological activities. Its representative, Amaryllis belladonna, has a geographical distribution covering mainly southern Africa, where it has significant usage in the traditional medicine of the native people. In this study, A. belladonna samples collected in Brazil were examined f...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Mannose-binding Lectins from the Amaryllidaceae and Alliaceae
A comparative study of the lectins from the families Amaryllidaceae and Alliaceae reveals many common features: all bind D-mannose exclusively and have similar molecular structures and amino acid compositions. All these lectins contain subunits of M, 11500-14000 which are not linked by disulphide bonds and occur as dimers (in Allium sativum, A. vineale, A. ursinum, A. moly, Narcissus pseudonarc...
متن کاملRole of Lectins in Plant - Microorganism Interactions
The influence of rhizosphere/rhizoplane culture conditions on the ability of various rhizobia to bind soybean seed lectin (SBL) was examined. Eleven strains of the soybean symbiont, Rhizobium japonicun4 and six strains of various heterologous Rhizobium species were cultured in root exudate of soybean ( Glycine max IL.I Merr.) and in association with roots of soybean seedlings which were growing...
متن کاملThe use of cytotoxic plant lectins in cancer therapy.
As part of their defense mechanism against herbivores or phytophagous insects, many plant tissues contain lectins. Some of these lectins are potent toxins which kill animal cells by arresting protein synthesis. An attractive strategy for developing specifically cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents is to link cell type-specific monoclonal antibodies to potent toxins. The plant protein ricin has eme...
متن کاملInhibition of bacterial adherence to saliva-coated through plant lectins.
In the present study, we evaluated the ability of lectin from Talisia esculenta (TEL) and a protein from Labramia bojeri seeds (Labramin) to inhibit adherence of microorganisms and exert antimicrobial effects. The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of these proteins were determined using 5 species of bacteria: Streptococcus mutans UA159, Streptococcus sobrinus 6715, Streptococcu...
